Motivation with Clarity EO

The following may or may not be a true story…

In a WhatsApp group chat with Steffie Sam, Irene Koh and Connie Wong:

Steffie: I don’t know what to write about for this week for LAO FB. No ideas liao… Plus I am having a headache today. A bad one.
Faith: Eh so simple. You go plonk oils on your head. Oils for occasional head discomfort (sometimes this compliant language makes me laugh.) 200 words. Go!
Steffie: Ok ok like that, I pick one topic for you too lah. Go write about oils for motivation. And you CANNOT mention Motivation eo. 200 words. Go!

(Steffie subsequently convinced Irene and Connie to join this impromptu challenge too. That woman ah, persuasive persuasive.)

So as a result of this challenge, I am now writing to you all on what I use for motivation without using Motivation eo. And that oil is… Clarity! #ifeelsosleepy #bedtimesoon

clarity

If you have seen my video on what oils I use to do my business planning and work, I actually flashed this large red pouch onscreen. That’s my work pouch and inside I have a large arsenal at my disposal, hahaha.

I love my business. And the truth is I do love most of what I do. I love the writing, teaching, sharing, coaching, working with my teams…

But I also got stuff I don’t like. I DISLIKE administration and logistics. Like mailing out stuff. Or coordinating for payments. I really procrastinate and the molehill gets bigger and bigger each day…

I like using Clarity to start my work because:

1. It gets me clear on why I am doing this. I may not like the specific task I am doing at hand but getting clear on why it is important, how it contributes to my grand vision, gets me to finish it.

2. If you look up Clarity in the mobile app, Reference Guide for Essential Oils, Clarity is especially created to help with metal alertness, focus and memory retention. So important for mundane stuff like administration.
TIP: If you or your kids are preparing for the exams in May, Clarity is an awesome oil to use!

3. There is oils like Cardamom, Lemon and Peppermint inside which perks me up. Especially when I feel sluggish, unmotivated and lazy. Like when I am writing this post. Heh.

Over to Steffie, Irene and Connie!

Happy Oils for Happy Mothers Part Three – Harmony

Part One: Orange

Part Two: Forgiveness

Part Three: Harmony

This is the last of a 3-part series of oils for happy mothers that was done over the Let’s Add Oil FB group with Facebook Live. Link to original video broadcast here

harmony

So why Harmony as a happy oil for happy mothers?

I was actually watching this webinar recently, and it was profiling a number of working mothers who are Young Living leaders. They were talking about how they juggle business and family and it was so interesting because the conversation got really emotional.

Mind you, these are high profile women, that kind who are juggling million-dollar businesses every month. But when they were talking about how they juggle family and work, you could see the tears running down their faces. And I just realised that, for us mothers, regardless of where are we at, there is always this kind of conflict and internal struggle in each of us.

We always talk about having work-life balance, which is the reason why I left my previous corporate job to do Young Living full-time – to have more time for my children at home. Now, coming to my third year in the business, I’m also starting to realise that it’s not so much about balance but it’s about harmony.

When I was younger, in my twenties and early thirties, before I had children, the season of my life then, was about my job. I loved my job, I loved what I do. I was happy spending longer hours at work, doing what I love in my job. At that time, I was in the IT department in a bank, and that time, was the season for me to focus on my career.

Then I got pregnant, I gave birth and I saw my baby daughter, I realised that things are changing so quickly. When I went back to work at the end of the maternity leave, I realised that my heart was no longer in my work, I just really wanted to be with my daughter. And for that 5 months back at work, there was this internal struggle. It’s a sense of disharmony inside me. In the end, I left my job as I really wanted to be with my daughter, and tried to do Young Living full time and see how things would do financially for my family.

So when I talk about work-life balance vs harmony, it was really about harmony all the time. If you think about your life as a sound board, like how DJs make music and they scratch the turntable? Certain configurations will be higher than the rest. So before my time as a mother, my career level was way up there, and family lower, because it was just me and my husband then. Now with my kids, especially after last year when my son was born, my level on family went way up and business went way down.

I tried to do this work-life balance thing, I thought it meant like 50% business and 50% family but I realised that life is so complicated that it just doesn’t work out that way. Right now, I acknowledge that there are some areas of my life that are really more important right now, like my family and my business. There are other areas that should also be important, but right now, they aren’t, like fitness, unfortunately. I also realised that for me to be really okay with each area of my life, is when the people who really care about me to be okay as well.

That’s the reason why I use Harmony oil, because I took quite a while to work this through. For a good half of last year, I really thought it was about work-life balance and I really tried to do that by cutting down on my work hours and be with my kids more often, but I also love my business. For me, being in the business and sharing with you guys about the oils is something I’m really passionate about, and something I come to life with. I can feel the joy and excitement as well. I love being a mom, but if I am just a mom all the way, I wouldn’t be completely happy. So it’s about coming to peace with myself and I use Harmony for that.

Harmony in yourself. Is there any areas of your life that you’re looking at that has tension? One really common example is if you have Monday blues, it’s a sign that there is something in you that isn’t very aligned yet. You may want to consider using the Young Living blend Harmony essential oil to work that through. I’m not saying that using this oil will force a change or make you really happy, but Harmony is an oil that would help you to facilitate releasing that negative feelings in you and working through it so that you can begin to move forward in life, whether it’s about your work, marital relationship, or your relationships with your children, bosses and colleagues.

Another thing I want to ask you is that, are you in harmony with your seasons of life? I know personally when I first had my girl, Juvia, 3 years ago, I was still trying to get used to being a mother. So the joke was that when we celebrated our first Mothers’ Day together, I thought about celebrating Mothers’ Day with my mother, and I actually forgot that I’m a mother myself! So it was such a revelation at that time, because I didn’t feel I was a mother, I was just being Faith, but learning to be a mother to my kids was a major phase in my life and it took a while for me to get harmonised and aligned to that.

The last thing is that, if you’re like me and there are certain times in the day where the chances of having family squabbles and tension is higher – for me, it’s during cooking and mealtimes, you can choose to diffuse Harmony in that area as well. I get quite stressed during cooking as I have to cook fast as my kids are tugging at my legs, pestering me, so I like to diffuse Harmony in the kitchen and dining room to maintain the peace.

So that’s my personal experiences with Harmony oil!

Now let’s talk about what’s in this blend that makes it so awesome for mothers. Okay the first oil, Lavender. You all know that Lavender is very calming, relaxing and helps to promote sleep as well. Do you also know that it helps to promote health, love, peace and also a sense of wellbeing? Lavender, being one of the oils that is very adaptive to us, besides Frankincense, it actually looks at what we have in our body and helps to address emotions as well. That’s why you find that both Lavender and Frankincense are very popular in the Young Living family.

We also have the powerhouse of Sandalwood and Frankincense, if you’ve read my post on Forgiveness oil, you will know that Forgiveness has Sandalwood and Frankincense as well. These two oils, because they are so good for the brain, it works on the pineal gland and the pituitary gland that manages your hormones, your sleep and wake cycles, your melatonin levels and your reproductive systems. So with Harmony containing them both, it helps you to release that perpetual programming in the brain. I rage when my daughter annoys me, that’s an automatic reaction. Using these oils with the intention to release the automatic reaction, also helps me to slowly let go, to calm down and pause instead of reacting right away.

It also has Orange. If you’ve read my post on Orange, you would know that it’s my happy oil. Upon smelling it, I’m just happier with a better mood!

There is also Geranium and if you may have noticed that Geranium and Rose smell very very similar. Geranium is a tad more floral that Rose, and besides being emotionally balancing, it works on the liver as well. Do you know that your liver stores your anger and fears? That’s why if you want to work on these 2 emotions, you can apply some oils over your liver to help release them. Your liver is actually on your right side of your tummy. You can use oils like Purification for anger, or Release for negative emotions and also Harmony. Geranium itself helps the liver to dispel toxins in the liver and it very hormonally balancing as well. If you have menstrual cramps, or PMS, try Geranium!

Besides these oils, there are so many more other oils in Harmony, some others would be Bergamot, Rose and Ylang Ylang. What they have in common is that they are all very emotionally balancing. So if you feel that you’re feeling irritable with your kids, husband or work, these are oils that can help to balance us emotionally. I started using Ylang Ylang a few months back and I really don’t like the smell of it but I have many bottles that came as freebies from my USA orders. I noticed that after using it, I’m a lot calmer with my kids and less prone to snapping.

One last thing I want to add is that, for a lot of us mothers, we started on this Young Living journey because we want to work on our kids’ health, so we buy respiratory and immunity oils. I’m like that too, so when my kids are okay, I put the oils aside but after I gave birth to my son, I didn’t feel too good about myself and my life. Then I realised that emotional health is really important as well, so that’s also why I started using a lot of emotional oils since last year to support my own emotional journey as a mother. So my mission for this series of emotional oils, is to spread the message that as mothers, we are worth it. We are worthy of great emotional health and of happiness too!

QNA

How do you apply Harmony?

Any oil that is emotionally balancing can be diffused or applied. You will probably find it difficult to apply on kids when they are cranky as you’ll be running around trying to get your hands on them, so it might be better and gentler to diffuse it.

With application, I rub it between my palms and apply it on the back of my neck. At the back of your neck and the base of your skull, there is a soft spot which is the brain stem. If you rub oils over there, it goes straight up into the brain itself. Another way you can do it is to apply one drop on the roof of your mouth but for those who don’t want to taste it, you can also put it over your forehead, the rims of your ears, over your heart and I would also inhale it.

Will the essential oils affect taste buds during mealtimes?

No, it doesn’t affect at all. I’ve done it and my kids were eating normally.

Happy Oils for Happy Mothers Part Two – Forgiveness

Part One: Orange

Part Two: Forgiveness

Part Three: Harmony

This is the second of a 3-part series of oils for happy mothers that was done over the Let’s Add Oil group with Facebook Live. Original video link here!

forgiveness

So my second oil of choice for happy mothers is Forgiveness. I was actually saying earlier, that some of my choices for these 3 days are kinda odd, but I will explain. First and foremost right, I’m going to get really personal here and tell you more about myself and my background to help you understand more about forgiveness and why it’s so important in our lives. I think whenever people think about the oil Forgiveness, I think the impression they have is, “oh it’s because I have this big grudge against somebody, who  did something really wrong to me, and I need to forgive the person.” I would tell you how forgiveness is so important to me and when you hear my story, perhaps it might bring out something relevant for you as well.

Firstly, some of my friends may already know as I don’t really keep it a secret, but when I was a teenager, I was actually a victim of molest. It was really a big thing at that time and I was traumatised. It happened when I was a teenage and it was actually a relative that did it to me.  And I can tell you that I spent many many years after the whole incident holding that hatred and the grudge against him. Unfortunately for myself, while I am fully justified in having those kind of feelings, it actually held me back from a lot of things. And when people asked me how I felt about it, the same old feelings will come up again. I will feel that hatred, that anger, that frustration, and it was preventing me from moving forward in life. There were times where I actually was not able to trust people because of what happened to me, even though it was not like a similar case, it still crept in.

When I was in my early 20s, which is how long I actually held on to all these negative emotions, I read a book on forgiveness. The first thing the book said was that when you are forgiving that person who has done wrong against you, it’s not that you actually condone the wrongdoing, but it’s actually giving yourself permission to free up your mind against what has been done to you. And when I read that, I totally disagreed, I thought I was justified to hold on to my anger towards this person.

It took me a few months for me to digest what I read from the book and I learnt that by not moving past that memory, is actually allowing that relative of mine to live, “rent-free” in my brain for that long. Not only that, it was affecting my life. The anger and frustration were creeping into my life, affecting my family life as well.

So I worked on that issue for quite a bit, actually. I worked on my feelings and I told myself that it is only right that I want to move on from this and so that was how I started. So right now, if you ask me what had happened in the past when I was being molested, I can definitely tell you the details, but do I feel any angst over it? No, I don’t, because I have already settled that part and I think that that is the greatest gift I can give myself, to allow myself to move forward and release all the feelings.

I will talk about another part on forgiveness before I move on to the oils in this blend. The other thing I want all of you to know, is that whether you are a mother, or not a mother, or maybe a parent, the thing is this, a lot of us are the hardest on ourselves. So forgiveness is something that I would want to apply to myself too. Let me tell you this, I am a guilt addict. For example, if anything goes wrong in my day, the first automatic reaction is to say “It’s my fault, what can I do to make it right?” And I realised that when I became a mother, the tendency to take on guilt actually magnified and that I learnt it from my mother.

Taking on the guilt bring with it feelings of regret, frustration and resentment. Let me give you an example, probably a common example that parents experience as well.

So when I go out with my friends, when I have a social life and have a good time, a lot of times, I feel a lot of guilt. “Why am I not at home with my family and kids? Why I am not there for my kids? I should be the one that is putting them to sleep and not my husband. I am a mother right, a mother has everlasting love for her children.” So with the resentment and frustration that came with that guilt. I will think that I’m not a good enough mother and when I try to be the mother that I hold as the ideal in my mind, the resentment and frustration comes in. “Oh I don’t have enough selfcare for myself. Oh I don’t have time for myself, I have no time to work out as well.” For myself right, that is how I use the Forgiveness oil.

My husband Jon has said this to me before and it has hit me right in the solar plexus, “Faith, do you know you’re very hard on yourself?” And it shocked me because I didn’t realise that. So for all you mothers out there, if you’re like me and you take on all the guilt and you’re very hard on yourself, if you beat yourself up, “I should have done this for my kids. I should have done that for my work.” Please don’t. Everyone of us over here are so deserving of love, blessings and forgiveness for ourselves.

So those are 2 stories around forgiveness, guilt and traumatic memories from my past. Let’s now go on into the properties of the oil itself. Forgiveness is a blend, and if you look at your essential oil resources, whether it’s the pocket reference or the mobile app, you will realise that there are so many, so many oils inside. There is easily about 10 oils inside but the one that really stuck out for me, are actually the lady oils, like Rose, Jasmine and Melissa. And when I read through the properties of each oil and looked at why Gary Young put those oils into this blend, it made perfect sense.

First and foremost, Rose. When you talk about the frequency of the oils, Rose is formally recognised as the one of the highest frequency. I know it’s in debate now that it might actually be Idaho Blue Spruce with a higher frequency, but in terms of formal documentation, it’s Rose. If you have never tried Rose, I suggest you go and rob, beg, steal, borrow Rose oil and try it. Somehow it really lifts up a person. I know that whenever I feel down, the smell of Rose really just lifts me up. When my child is cranky and really nothing else works, not Tranquil, not Peace and Calming, not Lavender, my husband who loves Rose so much, actually uses Rose on them and they calm down pretty darn quickly. With Rose’s high frequency, it invites love and joy into your life. So if you’re working through forgiveness and you are trying to work through the memories that hurt, and the negative emotions, that’s what Rose is for, in the Forgiveness blend.

The second oil is Jasmine, because sometimes if you’re grappling with letting go of things, you might feel helpless. Jasmine, besides being emotionally balancing, also helps one to work through the helplessness and invites you to take back the power in your life

The third lady oil is Melissa. I don’t know if you’ve heard me talking about Melissa before but when I was at the Young Living farm, that was the St Marie’s Farm at Idaho. Gary came and told the story of Melissa. If you look at the price tag of Melissa at the Young Living office, you will realise that after Rose, Melissa is the second highest priced oil. Melissa, also known as Lemon Balm, is a very delicate oil. When Melissa is being planted and harvested, it is an oil that demands everyone to treat her like a lady. And what I mean is that, when the farm workers are planting and harvesting the Melissa plant, they must be very mindful to be courteous to one another, they must not pick fights or use vulgar language because things like that actually affect the yield of the Melissa oil. And already the yield of the oil is very low, you’re talk about tons and tons of plants to give you that small bottle of oil.

Another thing is that, for Melissa, when the farm workers harvest the plant, they cannot put the plant down on the ground before gathering everything up to bring to the distillery. They have to cut it and bring it straight to the distillery because no lady wants to be put down on the ground as it actually decreases the yield too.

Other stuff like how Melissa is a plant that has to have people around her during certain times of the day, and how she doesn’t like to be out in the hot sun like a lady with very delicate skin so she wants to be there only in the early morning. So because of the amount of resources and dedication that has to be put into cultivating this plant, it has driven up the cost of the Melissa oil.

So if you’re ever lucky enough to score a bottle of Melissa, use it! I can’t really go into the other properties of Melissa because it’s not FDA compliant but I invite you to read your Essential Oil References to really learn more about it. It’s really darn good.

Negative emotions are actually stored in the limbic system and the limbic brain. The only way, if I’m not mistaken, that can unlock and release the negative emotions stored in the limbic brain is actually through scent and smells. That’s the reason why the oils are so powerful, because they actually work by going through the nose to reach the limbic system.

If you look at the other oils in this blend like Frankincense and Sandalwood, these are the oils that actually work on your pineal gland and limbic system to release the memories as you don’t want these to be stored in your brain. A lot of times, when we store such emotions in ourselves, it actually leads to illnesses. If I’ve a chance next time, I will share with you the story of my abscess, I just went through surgery and I’m finally done with the stitches. I will also explain to you why I would say that it came from negative memories as well. So I would encourage you all, if you are going through something like this, please work through your emotions, memories and and feelings. Use the oils, talk to somebody, journal in your book, because I think that everyone of us is very deserving of living a beautiful, lovely and blessed life.

I think that’s about it, actually. I know it’s a really odd oil to choose for Mothers’ Day and for happy mothers but I do think that when we work through our stuff, we are happier! And you know what? Our children will also benefit from forgiveness too.

Happy Mother’s Day!

QNA

How do you apply Forgiveness?

You see right, for me, anything to do with emotions, I would say just apply on your forehead, on the back of your neck and you can put it over your chest. But the pocket reference book says you can diffuse, directly inhale, add 2-4 drops to bath water, or you can apply 1-2 drops behind the ears, wrists, neck, temples, navel or the solar plexus. Or even over the heart. You can also dilute it if you want to, but I don’t. So that’s how you can apply it.

Happy Oils for Happy Mothers Part One – Orange

Part One: Orange

Part Two: Forgiveness

Part Three: Harmony

This is the first of a 3-part series of oils for happy mothers that was done over the Let’s Add Oil FB group with Facebook Live. Original video link here!

orange

I was talking about celebrating Mothers’ Day and I thought it would be really cool to showcase some oils that I personally think are oils that made me happy as a mother. I’ve been a mother since 2012, and my first born, Juvia is 3.5 years old and my son, Sol just turned 1 last month.

When I first became a mother, I thought, “Wow it’s going to be great! I’m going to be this dedicated, loving mother!” Then I got into really being a mother I realised that it’s so different! There are times where I was driven crazy by my kids, and while my kids have taught me a lot about myself and I’m so appreciative of that, I also realised that as a mom, it’s really about having that kind of patience and endurance with my kids. Especially since I’m almost 40 years old and my kids are so young and they can outrun me and out energise me anytime.

The first oil I want to talk about is Orange. Why did I pick Orange? I find it very interesting that when we talk about taking oils in water, right, the favourite oil is Lemon. In fact, Lemon went out of stock and came back recently. So I think most people take Lemon in water, but I actually take Orange. I really like the smell of Orange, just smelling it perks me up and lifts my mood. To be really honest, before I came on to this broadcast, I was feeling sluggish and not in the best of moods, so I took a drop of Orange, rubbed it between my palms and just inhaled. Wow just the mere smell of it already perks me up and makes me really happy, energises and cheers me up.

Okay, let’s talk about the other usages of Orange. You may already know if you ever have a tummy upset after spicy food, or when your kids are getting used to solids from milk, they have constipation or even diarrhea and you have been using Digize or even TummyGize, but did you know that Orange is a very good oil for digestion as well? So if you find that you have ran out of Digize, or if it’s not with you, you can also try Orange. And to be really honest right, if you look at the price difference, I think for Singapore members right now, Orange is around SGD18 or something like that. And in terms of smell, I will definitely tell you that I like the smell of Orange a lot better.

If you find that you want your kids to sleep, of course there are great oils for sleep like Lavender, Gentle Baby, Peace and Calming, but one really good combination is actually Cedarwood and Orange. Some people find that Cedarwood smells like cats’ pee, but because Cedarwood does such a good job at promoting sleep, what you can do is to combine Cedarwood with Orange to mask the woody smell of Cedarwood. Or even Cedarwood and Lavender. I’ve tried Cedarwood with Orange and it is really really nice, kind like going into a fruity forest and smelling the really nice, juicy smell in the bedroom when you are drifting off to sleep.

If you are a mother and you find that you have been shouting at your kids, and your vocal chords are strained, you can apply Orange to relax your throat. This is actually a very good tip for parents, especially if you have cheeky kids like mine, running all around.

If you’re worried that your kid is a picky eater and doesn’t want to eat the food that you’ve cooked, Orange is actually an appetite booster as well. You can diffuse it in the dining room or you can rub it on their tummies to promote their appetites. Come to think of it, I always drink Orange in my water, maybe that’s the reason why I’m not losing any weight. Other good oils for appetite include Lemongrass and Spearmint, but if Spearmint is too minty, then use Orange.

If you find that your skin complexion is dull or oily, or if you want to hide your wrinkles, you can add Orange to your moisturiser to boost your skin. Any citrus oil is great for oil control and you can use it for wrinkles as well. So I know that one of the top favourite oils for skin out there is Frankincense, but if you’re on a budget, and you are looking for something cheap and good, you can try Orange.

Another thing is that, if you have body odour and you smell quite funky in the armpits, you can try Orange. I know that Lemon and Lime can help to lighten the armpit area but I’m not so sure about Orange but you can give it a try. I do know that as a deodorant, Orange works well.

You can also take Orange to maintain a healthy cholesterol level. The other thing to note is that Orange is a great booster for immunity. Google this word, “glutathione”, this is actually the mother of all antioxidants. I can’t really say any further what it does for compliance reasons, but Orange helps to support our bodies to produce glutathione.

Another to know is that Orange supports the liver and helps you to detox as well. So besides being known as a master antioxidant, it is also a great liver detoxifier. You apply it over your liver, which is on the right side of your tummy, just apply it like once or twice a day. It is especially good when we are stressed at work, when there is pollution in the air, and when we eat a lot of processed foods in our diet.

If you have water retention like me, if you have puffy fingers, you can try soaking in warm water with Orange. I generally prefer to take Orange in water to minimise the water retention.

Some people ask, “oh if I use Orange, will I be allergic to it?”.

One thing to note for all Young Living Essential Oils is, the chances of having an allergic reaction, like rashes from allergy is quite small. But I also want to say that for Orange and other citrus oils, is a bit different. Most oils are steam distilled from the plant, but for citrus oils, they take the rind, and cold-press it to get the oil. So in that sense, if you talk about Orange, it’s not a true essential oil because it is cold-pressed from the rind. So if you are allergic to orange the fruit, then you may want to avoid Orange essential oil. Same goes for all the citrus oils like Lemon, Yuzu, Bergamot, Grapefruit and Tangerine.

The last thing is that, once you open your bottle, finish it up within 2 years. It can actually evaporate over time and you shouldn’t be keeping your oils for 2 years lah, you should be using everything up. 🙂

QNA

When applying Orange on face, do I need to avoid sunlight?

Because Orange is a citrus oil, and citrus oils are photosensitive, when you are applying on the face, you want do so during the evening hours. If you’re doing it in the morning, you want to keep out of the sunlight for the next 12 hours, otherwise when you go out in the sun, the oils will make your skin darker. It’s not permanent, but you don’t want to get dark patches here and there. If you want to play safe, just apply your citrus oils on your face, or anywhere that is prone to sun exposure, in the evening and just go and sleep. You will be safe with that.

How many drops of Orange in water when you consume it?

My bottle of water is about 1 litre, so if you’re starting out, you might want to do 5 drops in 1 litre. You can go up to 10 0r 15 drops, it’s really up to you. I kinda do about 10 drops in 1 litre of water. You also want to make sure that before you serve yourself a cup of water, shake it. What happens is that, when you drip in Orange, after a while, the oil will float to the top, so if you just drink like that, you will be taking in all the oil at the top. If your lips feel a burning sensation when drinking citrus oils in water, it is a sign that you need to shake your water before you drink or use a metal straw.

Another thing is that because you are drinking water with citrus oils, you want to use like a metal, ceramic or a glass cup or bottle. Don’t use plastic. If you use plastic, what happens is that, over time, your plastic will blur and start to corrode. This is because citrus oils and other essential oils actually leech out the petrochemicals from the plastic itself and you don’t want to be drinking that.

THE GREAT DIFFUSER EXPOSÉ PART THREE – YOUR DIFFUSING QUESTIONS

Introduction

Part One – Reviews on YL Diffusers

Part Two – Reviews on non-YL Diffusers

Actually I thought it’s gonna be a short article with like only 5 questions… then my awesome Let’s Add Oil teams came back to me with more questions. Thank you ah~~ *burns midnight oil*

So anyway here goes!

  1. Why diffuse? Isn’t it just a nice smell?
Nooooo~! Actually if you pick the right diffuser and use awesome oils like Young Living, diffusing can bring about so many benefits.
It can support your respiratory health, immunity, emotions and the list goes on. Tidbit! Do you know that emotional memories and trauma (eh even getting scolded by Mom when young also can be considered as trauma ok???) can only be released by smell alone? I kid you not.
  2. Can I use a burner, e.g. the one with a tealight candle?
Please don’t. When using the Young Living oils, I would highly recommend the Young Living diffusers and a select number of non YL ones that I have personally tried.
Basically you want to look for an ultrasonic diffuser that emits cool mist OR a nebulising diffuser rather than something that can burn and produce carcinogens with heat. After all, you don’t want to compromise the awesomeness of these oils ya?
  3. Can i mix 2 or more oils together to diffuse?
Ok, this one is a mixed bag of answers. I personally don’t because I think blending needs someone trained in aromatherapy to do it in order to yield the best benefits.
However I have seen blending recipes for diffusing at the Young Living Blog and have seen recipes created by YL members too. So I guess my answer to you is “Do you trust the source?” If so, go ahead.
  4. What are the diffuser brands you would recommend?
Definitely Young Living. For non YL brands, I do like Muji, 7 Hummingbirds, and those from Life Science Publishers. I have heard good things about brands like Novita and Whisper too.
  5. How about those pushcart diffusers? Or those from Qoo10?

Well honestly I haven’t tried those yet and can’t recommend either way. But I would question on their quality of plastic because the oils can corrode them.

Well for a fact, I know Osim doesn’t work well with the oils – it had spoiled their humidifier and the plastic has gone all blurry. Not a good sign.

And since you would be breathing in the air and the oils tend to leach out petrochemicals, you wouldn’t want the risk right?

  6. Why should I pick an ultrasonic diffuser and how does it work?
“Ultrasonic diffusers are typically filled with water and the Essential Oils are then added to the water where they remain on the water’s surface.  Most Ultrasonic Diffusers work by using ultrasonic vibrations to agitate the water causing the separation of the water particles and thereby releasing negative ions into the air. These negative ions bond with positively charged free radicals in the air and help to clean your space while adding a small amount of moisture. When using Essential Oils in your Ultrasonic Diffuser, the oil’s particles are dispersed into the air along with the water, leaving your space smelling fresh.  This is also how you will benefit from the Essential Oil’s therapeutic properties.”

  7. Why should I pick a nebulising diffuser and how does it work?

The nebulising diffuser works by forcing an air current through a narrow micro-tube which increases its velocity. The pressure at the exit point of the narrow micro-tube is subsequently reduced.

    nebuliser

Due to the difference in pressure, suction is created. Hence it causes the essential oil in an alternate micro-tube to rise up. Finally, the fast stream of pressurised air then comes into contact with the essential oil causing fine, atomized micro-particles of oil to be sprayed against the wall of the glass diffuser reservoir.
As a result, the smallest mist droplets (1.5 – 5µm) are diffused out of the top of the glass cap in a light vapor, while the larger mist droplets are returned to the bottom of the instrument to be diffused, thus forming a cycle.

Due to the fact that there is no heat involved, the original chemical structure of the essential oils are not altered or destroyed. Therefore, the essential oil molecules are able to be quickly inhaled and absorbed by the human body in their most natural, original state.

Thanks Winnie for putting this explanation together!

  8. How long should I diffuse?
You can usually diffuse as long as you want for most diffusers. For the AromaLux and Therapro, because they are so powerful and you can diffuse a full 15 ml bottle, I would suggest be conservative. If you want to diffuse non stop until the bottle is empty, try setting at a conservative setting first (low intensity, longer periods in between diffusing). AND DRINK MORE WATER PLEASE.When you inhale the oils, they do start cleansing you from inside and you need water to facilitate the cleansing. That could also help prevent rare but possible reactions like headaches.
  9. Is it ok to diffuse if I am pregnant / have a baby / young child in the room?
Yes it is generally ok. Diffusing is one of the gentlest ways to introduce oils to a body.Though I would say monitor and watch out for any symptoms too. Anytime you don’t feel comfortable, stop diffusing. Trust your gut instinct and honour your comfort level. 🙂
  10. How about diffusing for pets?
Yes it is ok too. But because your pet can’t communicate with you OR you may misread their cues, leave an escape route for them, e.g. leave the door ajar. If they don’t like it, they WILL leave the room.
  11. Can I diffuse in a room without aircon switched on?
Yes you can. You can also have the fans on, windows closed if you like. If your windows are open, perhaps shift the diffuser away from the window.
  12. What are some oils that are not ideal for diffusing?
That would be the really thick and goopy oils – Myrrh, Vetiver, Patchouli. They may clog up your diffuser so I would rather apply these topically instead.
  13. I heard from my friends that the ultrasonic diffusers need to use filtered / distilled / boiled water for diffusing. Is that true?
It depends on which diffuser you are using. Check the instruction manual? Thank goodness the recent models like Dewdrop can use tap water. I know personally that Muji, 7 Hummingbirds, SoundTech, Aria, Sha can use tap water too. 🙂
  14. I can turn on my diffuser but there is no mist coming out. Is it spoiled? What I can do?
If you have a YL diffuser, good news! There is a one year warranty. Bring it down and quote your member ID to the customer service staff. They will run a check, troubleshoot and swap for a brand new diffuser as necessary. The new diffuser will continue on the remaining of your existing warranty. If yours is a non YL diffuser, contact the seller. I am sure they would do something for you. I know 7 Hummingbirds and SoundTech have excellent customer service!

THE GREAT DIFFUSER EXPOSÉ PART ONE – WHICH YL DIFFUSER AND WHY?

Introduction

Part Two – Reviews on non-YL Diffusers

Part Three – Your Diffusing Questions

So here is my lowdown on the many YL diffusers I have used. Just remember that for the prices listed, sometimes YL does monthly promos that allow YL members to get them for free. 🙂

Dewdrop Diffuser

Young-Living-Dewdrop-Diffuser

One of the starting diffusers that most people have since it may come FREE when you sign up for a YL membership or after completing 3 months of Essential Rewards orders.

Created by the renown diffuser company, Puzhen, I really like the Dewdrop. It is resilient, easy to use, easy to clean and you have the options whether to have the blue light on or off.

  1. Type of Diffuser: Water
  2. Cost: Free to SGD117.50 for members. Come with a free 5ml Lemon and Lavender
  3. Area of coverage: Bedroom
  4. The Piggy Factor: Very easy to use and clean. Tops most diffusers by being able to diffuse up to 4 hours.
  5. Consumption of EO: 5-8 drops for a full tank of water, diffuse up to 4 hours
  6. Travel friendly: No. Because of the conical shape, it’s a little hard to pack in
  7. Appearance: Utilitarian
  8. Ease of Cleaning: Easy. Wide base so you don’t have to strain your fingers poking and cleaning at the cornerswpid-dsc_1724.jpg
  9. Tip! Align the inner cover with the hole along the same line as the button at the bottom AND the Young Living words with the top cover for a perfect fit when you close the diffuser before operating.

Ceramic Diffuser

ceramic diffuser

When I was tired of using water based diffusers (have you seen how the water looks like when you didn’t diffuse for days?! Uurgh!), I went to explore the nebuliser type of diffusers.

At that time, the ceramic diffuser was just launched to replace the Everyday Diffuser and I got one to try. I like it so much that I got 2 more because I love the strength of its diffusing and I prefer nebulising to water diffusers. It’s not very child friendly though because it’s made of ceramic and glass so be careful if you have young kids around.

  1. Type of Diffuser: Nebuliser
  2. Cost: SGD100.50 for members. Come with a free 5ml Citrus Fresh
  3. Area of coverage: Bedroom / Large Room / Living Room
  4. The Piggy Factor: Well… it can be finicky to clean so I compensate for it by not cleaning very often and using back the same oils over and over again. Ahaha. However it does get choked up if you delay the cleaning for too long and you can see a pool of eo in the base of the flask.
  5. Consumption of EO and Duration: 12-20 drops, diffuse to under 3 hours
  6. Travel friendly: No. It’s fragile
  7. Appearance: Utilitarian
  8. Ease of Cleaning: Medium. What I do is I use the YL Thieves Household Cleaner and water to clean the inside. Once it is clean but wet, I run the diffuser and it vibrates off the water (if you are particular about it being dry)
  9. Tip! Sometimes water or eo get stuck in the narrow tunnel underneath the flask. I usually use my mouth and blow hard to push the oil / water out. Weird I know but hey it works!

Aria Diffuser

4524

Oh my, the crème de la crème of all YL diffusers. When I first saw it, I LUST for it… but wow the price! #imworthit

So I got smart. I BUGGED my hubs and sis until they gave me my ONE AND ONLY ARIA for Christmas 4 years ago. Heh. Well Young Living Singapore got SMARTER. They gave it as a freebie for the December holiday promo then. WUTTTT. So anyway. *ahem* #luckilynotmymoney

The Aria is also from the renown diffuser company, Puzhen. This is a lovely lovely piece that adds a touch of class to your living room or bedroom. It has pre-programmed soothing zen music and lights that transports you to SPA LAND or in my case, got me to doze off before bedtime. *sheepish*

When it is operating, you will see the mist filling up the glass bowl before coming out of the sprout. Such a beautiful piece. And robust too. My Aria is still working well after all these years.

  1. Type of Diffuser: Water
  2. Cost: SGD335 for members.
  3. Area of coverage: Bedroom / Large Room / Living Room
  4. The Piggy Factor: Very easy to clean and operate because the base is large.
  5. Consumption of EO and Duration: 12-20 drops, you can diffuse to 3 hours for 2 rounds
  6. Travel friendly: No no no! It’s large and fragile… LEAVE IT AT HOME!
  7. Appearance: Beautiful
  8. Ease of Cleaning: Easy. I usually just rinse it, drain off then dry and use. Just be careful with the glass globe
  9. Tip! Be careful not to have water stay in the diffuser for too long. There are metal parts in the Aria and I’ve realised the metal circle at the bottom of the Aria rusted a little AFTER MANY MANY TIMES OF NOT EMPTYING IT OUT AND LETTING THE WATER EVAPORATE.GLUM.
Well that’s what I pay for being a PIGGY

USB Diffuser

usb_diffuser__86506-1422066574-1280-1280

When I first saw this at the USA Convention in 2014, I was like wow, this is so cool! A thumbdrive diffuser, portable, nifty looking and you can even set the intensity of the diffusing.

1. Type of Diffuser: Nebuliser
2. Cost: SGD37.50 for members
3. Area of coverage: Personal space / car
4. The Piggy Factor: Only hardworking people need to apply! This diffuser  is tricky to clean and you MUST clean it often so that it operates well
5. Consumption of EO and Duration: It comes with a teeny 2 ml bottle so it depends on how often you diffuse, the intensity you set.
6. Travel friendly: Perfect traveling companion. Does your neighbour on the plane smell weird? This is a perfect solution
7. Appearance: Cute
8. Ease of Cleaning: Difficult. You have to clean thoroughly with rubbing alcohol and OFTEN otherwise it may not work well. Be careful with citrus oils or blends with citrus oils because these are especially hard wearing on the diffuser especially if the bottle leaks
9. Tip! If your USB diffuser is not working, clean again and clean thoroughly with rubbing alcohol. I have heard of cases of diffusers being miraculously resuscitated with proper cleaning 🙂

AromaLux and AromaDome

AromaLux_Combo__31062.1435679149.1280.1280

The AromaLux (that pyramid looking thing) on the right is available in YL SG. This is the MOST POWERFUL diffuser you can find in YL Singapore and can probably rival the Therapro diffuser from YL USA for its strength and various diffusing options.

The AromaLux works by popping the bottle of eo of your choice right into the pyramid, set your duration and interventions of diffusing and you are ready to go!

The AromaDome is the tent that is a optional purchase from YL USA. If you want to have focused, intense diffusing, you can rig the Lux up to hook up to INSIDE the Dome like this:

julie-aromadome-400x319

This is very ideal if you want to work on supporting your respiratory, immunity, emotions and so on and want an intense experience. It is recommended that you use the Dome and Lux together for no more than 30 mins. I know I have tried 5 mins and found it pretty pheeeew~~!

1. Type of Diffuser: Nebuliser
2. Cost:
AromaLux – SGD176 for members
AromaDome – USD89.75 before shippping
3. Area of coverage: HDB Flat / Very large spaces
4. The Piggy Factor: You basically only need to clean the tube or change it when you want to change the oils to be diffused
5. Consumption of EO and Duration: Depending on the intensity, duration, intervention of diffusing you set. A 15 ml bottle should last for a few days at the lowest setting
6. Travel friendly: Yes. The Dome can be folded like a car shade so it is very portable. The Lux is made of plastic so there are no breakables
7. Appearance: Utilitarian
8. Ease of Cleaning: Easy. Either wash the teeny tube or change to a new one
9. Tip! If you are diffusing a blend that has been blended with a carrier oil, you may find the residue of the carrier oil when the Lux has diffused off all the eo. Also before you plug the YL eo bottle into the AromaLux, please REMOVE the white ring of the bottle otherwise the fit into the top of the Lux is not tight

Sha Diffuser (also known as Rainstone Diffuser)

THE GREAT DIFFUSER EXPOSÉ INTRODUCTION!!

Honestly I don’t have this diffuser but my team mate, Bunga Mawar has kindly stepped in with her review. Thank you so much Bunga!!
